It is rare to see accumulators in everyday situations, however they are used for the following applications:

 

  ■ Energy Storage (power compensation)

An accumulator's most common usage is to store energy from an external pressure source during idle time and to discharge the energy as necessary. In another words, it is used for the reduction of pump/motor size, as an auxiliary power source in emergency, as a hydraulic starter for an internal combustion engine, as an aid for pump delivery at the time of a high-speed activation of an actuator, etc.

 
  ■ Water-hammer/surge-pressure absorption (shock absorption)

Suddenly shutting off a high-pressure and high-flow pipeline generates large impact pressure. Furthermore, external mechanical shock to an actuator may cause fluid vibration, and thus damage to equipment. An accumulator mitigates these shocks.

 
  ■ Pump pulsation dampener (pulsation dampener)

Pulse pressure of a single, dual, or triple-piston pump with high pressure makes controlling a pressure reducing device difficult. An accumulator can remove pulse pressure, as well as the knocking phenomenon caused by very small feeds of a cylinder such as a machine tool.

 
  ■ Leak compensation

The accumulator mitigates the pressure drop caused by a leak that may occur by keeping an actuator at a fixed position for a long time, or by clamping something.

 
  ■ Temperature change compensation

The accumulator compensates for the pressure rise in a closed circuit exposed to direct sunlight or, on the contrary, pressure drop caused by liquid contraction in cold climates.

 
  ■ Hydraulic balancer

Because gas pressure in an accumulator serves as a so-called weight, vertical movement of a machine tool head or a television camera can be controlled by cylinder friction.

 
  ■ Hydro-pneumatic shock absorber

The accumulator serves as a spring for absorbing shock between the body and wheels of a vehicle. In addition, it can be utilized as a pneumatic spring for various reduction rolls. It has less fatigue and greater shock absorptivity than a spring.

 
  ■ Transfer barrier

This is a method to transmit or transfer pressure from one side of the barrier to the other without incorporation of a different fluid. In this method, the accumulator serves as a gas compressor or transfers corrosive fluid. In order to reduce the accumulator pressure change caused by charging or discharging fluids, the accumulator can also be operated with low differential pressure by increasing its gas chamber volume.

 
  ■ Fluid supplying device

The accumulator can be used for supplying lubrication oil or as a portable oil lubricator.
